How Does Botox Work?

Botox only works for dynamic wrinkles, i.e., the type of wrinkles formed due to the overuse of facial muscles. Dynamic wrinkles appear when you activate your facial muscles to produce certain expressions, such as laughing, smiling, or frowning. When you engage these muscles, your face produces lines that disappear when you stop conveying those expressions. Over time, the dynamic wrinkles become static, i.e., they stay on your face even at rest.

Botox belongs to a category of injections known as neuromodulators, i.e., injections with the active ingredient botulinum toxin. This neurotoxin protein blocks communications between nerve endings and muscles, essentially paralyzing specific muscles. When injected into targeted facial muscles, Botox can temporarily relax the muscles responsible for your dynamic wrinkles, thus softening the associated expression lines. Early intervention with Botox can also help you prevent or delay the onset of facial wrinkles.

Your Botox Session

Ahuja Bariatric & Beyond performs personalized Botox treatments according to your unique facial anatomy, goals, and requirements. Our medical providers will carefully examine your facial skin, identify the sites with dynamic wrinkles, and review your medical history. The cosmetic provider will mark the targeted injection points on your face and select the appropriate units of Botox for each treatment area.

During your treatment, the cosmetic provider will cleanse your facial skin and apply a numbing gel that ensures comfort. The selected units of Botox are carefully injected into the targeted areas on your face using ultrafine needles. The number of units necessary depends on your current condition and requirements. The entire procedure concludes within 15 to 30 minutes, following which you can return home.

Recovery After Botox

Botox doesn’t involve major side effects or complications. You will experience mild post-treatment redness, swelling, tenderness, lumping sensations, and bruising around the injection points. But these side effects dissipate within a few days. You can resume your daily activities and work immediately, but you must avoid strenuous workouts and physical activities for a day. You should also keep your head elevated for a few hours.

The Onset & Longevity of Results

You will start noticing mild improvements in your skin after a few days — your wrinkles will gradually smoothen away. The final results take up to two weeks to become visible. If you don’t see sufficient improvements after two weeks, you can get another dose. The final results last for 3 to 4 months, following which you will need additional sessions. Most patients opt for 3 to 4 Botox sessions per year.
